She folded her jeans and set them on the lounge chair. Taking one final deep breath, she pulled her top over her head, then set it neatly by her jeans.

Her gaze shifted to Cole, who was suddenly silent. She realized he was staring at her with a rather strange expression on his face. Had she somehow managed to shock the world-famous Cole Parker?

She didn't speak, but walked over to the stairs. His eyes followed her every move. He had yet to meet her gaze. He was honed in on her body. Something about that was empowering.

Liberating.

Although she had no experience with playing the temptress, the situation felt right to give it a try. Dark, seductive lighting...clear, warm water...a hot, transfixed male. Yeah, she was pretty sure the circumstances were right. She just didn't know if she had it in her.

She slowly descended the steps into the water. "So, Mr. Parker," she said in a casual tone, "what shall we do in this magnificent pool of yours?"

"Um..."

He didn't move as she walked from the shallow end to where he stood with the water lapping at his waist. She allowed her gaze to move over the hard muscles of his upper body as she approached. Even as she fully appreciated his fine physique with a woman's eye, she felt pride for helping him maintain it.

"The water feels wonderful," she said.

She walked to his side until the water reached her belly button, then came to a stop less than a foot from him. His gaze finally moved to hers. For the first time, she read stark desire in a male's gaze. Her pulse raced.

What in the world was she doing? Temptress? Yeah, right.

"Everly," he said.

His voice was low. Ragged. He closed the distance between them. Her nerves shimmied.

Oh, God. Was he going to kiss her? What should she do?

He paused. His eyes swept over her face. Whatever he read there had him backing up. Once again, she felt both relieved and disappointed.

Why was she so awkward with guys? With intimacy?

"You're not nearly wet enough," he said then.

Her mouth fell open. Then he grabbed her and leaped with her into the deep end. When they surfaced, she laughed and splashed him for dunking her. She realized the pool was filled with saltwater instead of chlorine as she pushed her hair out of her eyes.

"I'm totally getting you back for that," she said, fighting a smile.

The chase was on. He was a strong swimmer, but she was lighter and sleeker. When he would have powered his way across the pool to evade her, she zipped along beneath the surface and paced him. After several minutes of pursuing him, she cornered him near the waterfall that spilled in from a spa off the far side of the pool. They were both breathless and laughing like idiots.

"I think grabbing my swimsuit to drag me back was playing dirty," he said as he caught his breath.

"Sure it was. Serves you right."

"Remind me not to dunk you again unless I want to skinny dip."

She laughed again. His back was turned to her, the position in which she'd finally caught him. Only then did she register that her arms were still around his waist.

The feel of his body pressed against hers...his taut skin beneath her fingertips...it was--

"Tell you what," he said, turning around to face her. She didn't want to move her hands, and since he didn't try to escape her touch, she didn't. "That was too easy. I'll find you with my eyes closed."

"Oh, yeah? Marco Polo style?"

"Something like that. And when I do, I want a reward."

She could only echo him as she held his intent gaze. "A reward?"

"Yes, Ms. Wallace. I want a real kiss."

the midnight garden: Big Box of Summer ARCs Giveaway!

Y'all -- this is a pretty amazing giveway - go check them out!

the midnight garden: Big Box of Summer ARCs Giveaway!:

Unbreak Me - Lexi Ryan

4.5 stars -- Im rounding it up to 5 because of Asher.

Every girl deserves one like him.

Unbreak Me is a story of survival and triumph. Of learning how to trust and tearing down walls. A story about how words and gossip in a small town can become so corrosive that they become the "truth" until they no longer matter.

Maggie Thompson is a victim of her past choices (and lack thereof). Backlash has her convinced that she is a whore, that she is a disgrace, that she is a failure. Back in town for her sister's wedding (to Maggie's ex-fiance - talk about a slap in the face) Maggie has one thing on her mind -- turning over a new leaf and surviving.

But that takes time and during a well needed respite from the wedding reception, she runs into Asher Logan.

Asher Logan. Gah!

Asher is an outsider. He lives in the house next door, but hasn't been around much. One benefit of being an outsider is that he isn't prejudiced by the gossip, the rumors, the resulting Scarlet Letter that Maggie has branded upon herself. He sees a girl who hurts.

Wounded by his own choices, he helps Maggie tear down the walls she has built to protect herself and realize that maybe she isn't a total disappointment. That her past doesn't need to define her and that she is worthy of being loved.

This story broke my heart. Reading it took me back -- not because my past was like Maggie's (thank goodness) but I know what it is like to have so little self-worth. To have walls. To not trust.

I remember the first time somebody tried to break down my walls.  I totally wasn't ready and 21 years later I remember the conversation like it was yesterday.  Reading Maggie struggle with letting Asher in - it brought back so many feels.

One thing I will say about Maggie, is that while she has a negative self-image, she is NOT a doormat. I felt sorry for her, but I did not pity her. She is witty and snarky and the back and forth with Logan was totally believable.

I do wish there had been a little more of Asher's back story in this book -- a little insight into why he was able to understand and forgive so easily. The things he says, the way he cares for Maggie and the way he allows her to slowly trust...and then, when he's sitting in jeans, shirtless and barefoot strumming a guitar...a'wkjfda;askjrfdsalsa;.

All in all, this book was a really good read. I started and finished it in the same day and will definitely search out other books from Ms. Ryan.

Waiting On Wednesday - Covet by Tracey Garvis Graves

I promise I'm not stalking Tracey Garvis-Graves, but holy cow, I'm still all kinds of flaily over On the Island so knowing that she has a new book coming out in September is THE BEST NEWS EVER!

From Goodreads:

What if the life you wanted, and the woman you fell in love with, belonged to someone else?

Chris and Claire Canton’s marriage is on life support. Downsized during the recession and out of work for a year, Chris copes by retreating to a dark place where no one can reach him, not even Claire. When he’s offered a position that will keep him away from home four nights a week, he dismisses Claire’s concern that time apart could be the one thing their fragile union can’t weather. Their suburban life may look idyllic on the outside, but Claire has never felt so disconnected from Chris, or so lonely.

Local police officer Daniel Rush used to have it all, but now he goes home to an empty house every night. He pulls Claire over during a routine traffic stop, and they run into each other again at the 4th of July parade. When Claire is hired to do some graphic design work for the police department, her friendship with Daniel grows, and soon they’re spending hours together.

Claire loves the way Daniel makes her feel, and the way his face lights up when she walks into the room. Daniel knows that Claire’s marital status means their relationship will never be anything other than platonic. But it doesn’t take long before Claire and Daniel are in way over their heads, and skating close to the line that Claire has sworn she’ll never cross.

WANT!!!!!   Can you blame me for being excited?!?

What book are you waiting for?

Top Ten Tuesday -- Quotes

This week The Broke and The Bookish gave us a "freebie" week, so here are my Top Ten quotes from books I've read.  At least, they're my top ten today :)

“In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”
Jane Austen
, Pride And Prejudice

“Tell me what you listen to, and I'll tell you who you are.”  ― Tiffanie DeBartolo, How to Kill a Rock Star

(As a side note, I probably could have pulled 10 quotes from this book alone)

“My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations.”
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

(I could have pulled more from this book as well)

“I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.”
J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

“God, I love a man with a big vocabulary.”
Tiffany Reisz, The Siren

“You only get one life. It's actually your duty to live it as fully as possible.”
Jojo Moyes, Me Before You

"It ain’t dying I’m talking about, it’s living. I doubt it matters where you die, but it matters where you live.” ~spoken by Augustus McCrae”
Larry McMurtry, Lonesome Dove

“At the end of the day it's about how much you can bear, how much you can endure. Being together, we harm nobody; being apart, we extinguish ourselves.”
Tabitha Suzuma, Forbidden

“I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks.”
Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

“I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives.”
R.J. Palacio, Wonder

This was incredibly difficult -- not so much finding the quotes as narrowing it down to 10.  What is one of your favorites?  Let me know!

Don't Bite the Bridesmaid -- Tiffany Allee

I used to read Paranormal Romance all the time, but then it seemed like they were all the same and omg, they were ALL ABOUT VAMPIRES.  All of them.  So I stepped away, only reading one from time to time when I needed a break from my usual genres.

And to be perfectly honest, this was why I picked up Don't Bite the Bridesmaid last week.  Because I felt like I needed a palate cleanser from all the YA and New Adult I had been reading.

What a surprise!  It was refreshing to read a PNR that was funny and sweet and light and all kinds of romantical and has all the key elements (ahem) of why we read romance books to begin with.  But it wasn't over the top with the stereotypical all knowing vampire and doormat heroine  (cough Bella Swan cough).

Neighbors for years but barely even acquaintances, Alice and Noah's lives collide when desperate circumstances require that they spend a week together on a cruise ship.  The situation isn't ideal for either of them, but there's that whole saying about life and lemons and lemonade.

Alice is easy to like -- sure she has her flaws, but who doesn't.  Especially when they've been burned before.  And her family cracked me up.

Noah is a bit broody, but I would be too if I being forced into an arranged marriage.  Yet he manages to set it aside to help Alice out when she needs him.  And he doesn't sparkle!

As the week progresses and walls come down, acquaintances become friends become more.  Knowing the cruise is a week long allows the pacing of their relationship to seem realistic and the ending will leave you with a smile on your face -- complete enough to read as a stand alone, but with enough openings to allow for potential future books.

Tiffany Allee has written a story that entertained me from beginning to end.  I would recommend this one to anybody looking to add to their summer reading list -- and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she writes more about this cast of characters.

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Author Bio - A. M. Hargrove

One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn't do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life.  So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase.  Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodgeball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head.  Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what lap top out the window.   She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone and hit #4 on her speed dial.

 Boss:  Hello
 A.M.:  Boss, is that you?
Boss:  Why yes, A. M., who else would be answering my phone?
A.M.:  Er... right.  Well, I'm calling to let you know you can pick up my luxury Ford Focus at Starbucks near the interstate.
Boss:  Why ever would I want to do that?
 A.M.:  Because I quit!
A.M. hit the end button and speed dialed her husband.
A.M.:  Hi hubs, can you pick me up at Starbucks?
Hubs:  Sure... Having some car trouble?
A.M.:  Not at all.  I don't have a car to have trouble with because I just quit my job.
 Hubs:  WHAT?!
A.M.:  It's time for a new career and I am going to be a very famous novelist.

So began A. M. Hargrove's career as a young adult paranormal romance author of self-published ebooks.  Her series, The Guardians of Vesturon, centers around a family of six siblings and is a mix of humor, mystery, suspense and of course, love.  Survival and Resurrection are her first and second full length novels in the series and Beginnings is the prequel novella.  Her third installment, Determinant, will be released on June 30, 2012.  (It didn’t happen exactly like that, but you get the idea!)

On the Island - Tracey Garvis-Graves

You know that feeling when you finish a really really good book and when you put it down you sort of feel like nothing you ever read will be as good as the one you just finished?  I call those book hangovers and I have one.  It is ugly.

I remember seeing On the Island mentioned quite a bit when it was first published last summer and I've had it on my Kindle for months, but it had gotten buried somewhere on page 4 or 5 and I had forgotten about it.  On a whim, I started reading it on Wednesday afternoon and from the beginning, I couldn't. put. it. down.

I have to confess, I think part of the reason I had put off reading it so long is because the first thing I noticed when reading about the book was that it told the story of a 30 year old teacher being stranded on an island with a 16 year old student.  I mean, hello -- giant red warning flags, right?  But I sort of hate that it is even mentioned because that is SO not what this story is about and yet it was always kind of in the back of my mind saying "what kind of book is this going to be?".  Until all of a sudden, it was gone. Please don't let my ramblings scare you off -- I promise I wouldn't tell you to read something squicky.

Trust me.

Anna and TJ are on their way to a summer in the Maldives when tragedy strikes and their plane crashes.  After they survive the impact, they somehow make it to a deserted island where they hope for rescue.  Surely somebody will be searching for them, right?  Right?

Right?

Hours turn to days...to weeks...to months...to years.

As the story progresses, you find yourself pulling for these characters, for Anna and TJ to survive.  You don't see 30 and 16, you see trust and growth and strength.  Told in alternating POVs, this book evoked every possible reaction.  I laughed, I smiled, I cried, I was scared, I cried, I cheered, I was angry...and when I finished it, I was sooooo sad.  Not because of what happens, but because it was over.  Gah, it is so hard to write what I want to say without giving anything away.

Tracey Garvis-Graves writes beautifully.  The story was fluid even with the alternating POVs and captivating.  I look forward to reading more by this author.

On a side note -- Jaime and Bri and Tara and Jess...WHY did you not make me read this one sooner?

This Girl (Slammed #3) - Colleen Hoover

A few days ago, I did a quick Facebook status on my F&F page that mentioned Colleen Hoover.  I had just finished reading This Girl and was so overcome by, well...flails :) that I had to do something.  That was the whole point of me starting this blog and social media outreach -- TO DO SOMETHING WITH MY FEELS!  Because lets face it, I can tell my poor dog about all the books I love, but she's not going to do anything with it.

So...back to the point.  Normally, I am a big believer in less is more.  In a world where seemingly every book written is a part of a trilogy or series and books are divided into two movies (WHY???), when I heard that there was going to be a 3rd installment in the Slammed series and that it was going to be a retelling of Will and Lake's story from Will's point of view, I was honestly a little meh.  BUT...I also loved Slammed and Point of Retreat so much I knew that I'd end up reading it.

I ended up loving it.

His perspective on their story, their relationship added just the right amount of...finish.  I didn't feel like this book was just a regurgitation of the previous two.  I didn't feel like it was excessive or unnecessary or over the top.  It felt right.

“If I took every romantic poem, every book, every song, and every movie I've ever read, heard or seen and extracted the breathtaking moments, somehow bottling them up, they would pale in comparison to this moment.

This moment is incomparable.”

And they lived happily ever after.

Waiting On Wednesday - How To Love

Apparently October is going to be a busy month for me because like my post from last week, my next Waiting On Wednesday book is also scheduled to be released that month.

From Amazon:

Before: Reena Montero has loved Sawyer LeGrande for as long as she can remember. But he's never noticed that Reena even exists . . . until one day, impossibly, he does. Reena and Sawyer fall in messy, complicated love. But then Sawyer disappears without a word, leaving a devastated—and pregnant—Reena behind.

After: Almost three years have passed, and there's a new love in Reena's life: her daughter. Reena's gotten used to life without Sawyer, but just as suddenly as he disappeared, he turns up again. Reena wants nothing to do with him, though she'd be lying if she said his being back wasn't stirring something in her.

After everything that's happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again?

It is true -- I love a good reunion love story and I can't wait for the pink puffy heart swoons and the sentimental feels.  What?  I'm not always snarky :)

Now it is your turn -- what book are you waiting on?  Tell me so I can add it to my to-read list.

Top Ten Tuesday - Favorite Covers of Books I've Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.  I had so much fun last week that I thought I'd do it again!

This week's topic:  Top Ten Favorite Book Covers Of Books I've Read

It was like this week was hand picked just for me!  There are a couple of books I've purchased just because I fell in love with the cover.  I do love pretty things :)

And I know, I know -- there's that whole thing about not judging a book by its cover, but after looking at my top ten, can you blame me?

**I do need to say that these are based on books that I've read since 2011, when I signed up on Goodreads and are in no particular order.

The Lost Girl - Sangu Mandanna

From Goodreads:

Eva's life is not her own. She is a creation, an abomination--an echo. She was made by the Weavers as a copy of someone else, expected to replace a girl named Amarra, her "other," if she ever died. Eva spends every day studying that girl from far away, learning what Amarra does, what she eats, what it's like to kiss her boyfriend, Ray. So when Amarra is killed in a car crash, Eva should be ready.

But sixteen years of studying never prepared her for this.

Now she must abandon everything and everyone she's ever known--the guardians who raised her, the boy she's forbidden to love--to move to India and convince the world that Amarra is still alive.

What a concept.

I remember being sixteen -- it was hard enough figuring out how to be myself, I can't imaging fighting those instincts and HAVING to be somebody else.  Sure, there are days when I wish there were two of me but I say that as me...not the echo.  And trying to put myself in Eva's shoes had me thinking about this book for weeks after I turned the last page.

And now as a parent, I can't imagine anything worse than losing a child.  But what if you could have a replacement made, one that would be an exact replica of what you loved and held and cherished?  Could you ever get past knowing that it wasn't really your child, even if it was.  And would it be?  Would having the constant reminder of what you have lost be better than having to rely on memories?  So many things to think about.

Mandanna writes a story that has a little bit of everything -- family, love, secrets, danger, suspense -- and writes it really really well.  The ending has me clamoring for a sequel, but then there is part of me that wants it to be a stand alone. It makes the ending that much more powerful.  Gah - I want both!  If this is her debut novel, I can't wait to see what she has up her sleeve for future works.

Me Before You - Jojo Moyes

From Goodreads:

Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.
What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane.
Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that.
What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they're going to change the other for all time.

One of my favorite things is when an author writes a story that slams into my soul.  When I read a book thinking I know what I'm going to find and instead, I'm absolutely blindsided.  That's what happened with this book.  Jojo Moyes takes a tough topic and turns it into an incredible love story -- not a romance, but a love story.

On Tuesday, I listed this book in my Top Ten Books Dealing With Difficult Subjects -- quite honestly, I feel pretty confident saying it is my favorite book of 2013 and in my Top Ten period. (And Katy, when you told me you bought this book yesterday, it was all I could do to not jump up and down and fist-pump!)

It is a story about love and life and life and love.  A story of family and devotion.  A story of difficult choices and taking chances and keeping promises.  It is funny and sweet and though provoking and omg, why don't you just rip my heart out and stomp on it while you're at it.

My husband was home for lunch when I finished reading it and upon hearing me sobbing in my chair, he shook his head and said "why do you do this to yourself?"

BECAUSE!!!!!

I fell in love with Lou and her passion for living even before she realized she had it.  I fell in love with Will for seeing Lou's potential and for shoving it in her face.  I want to wear striped tights and go to Paris and wear red dresses.  So much can take place in six months, never stop taking advantage.

“The thing about being catapulted into a whole new life--or at least, shoved up so hard against someone else's life that you might as well have your face pressed against their window--is that it forces you to rethink your idea of who you are. Or how you might seem to other people.”

And when perfect endings are perfect, what more can I say besides read it -- and then let me know what you think.

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Books Dealing With Tough Subjects

So the super fun bloggers at The Broke and The Bookish host a fun challenge called Top Ten Tuesday and I thought I'd give it a try.

This week's topic:  Top Ten Books Dealing With Tough Subjects

Ok, so wow.  Fun stuff, right? :)  But when I sat down and thought about it, many of my recent favorites have been books that push the emotional envelope a little bit.  Or a lot.

Some of these I plan on talking about in a future post, some of these you'll just have to trust me.  Email me, text me, track me down in the carpool line and I'll be glad to talk to you about them one on one -- but when faced with a blank page and a cursor...I can't find the words.  At least not today.

As always, click on the title for more info.
