Review: Love Me to Death by Marissa Clarke

Medical research scientist Elena Arcos has always lived her life under the radar, which is not easy to do when you live with the craziest woman in the world. But eccentric Aunt Uza is a picnic compared to the other people who enter her orderly life after she is shot in a convenience store robbery.

Elena finds herself rocketed from comfortable predictability to supernatural insanity courtesy of her own private angel of death who happens to have the sexiest accent on earth and a body to match. Her death angel is convinced she’s some kind of freaky half vampire thing and that her deceased dad was the real deal: a blood sucking monster.

Yeah, right. She’ll play along, but then she doesn’t have much choice seeing how as the guy claims to be some immortal law enforcer and has taken her prisoner.

* * *

Nikolai Itzov had expected to fight the urge to torture the progeny of his father’s murderer, but he’d never anticipated battling the urge to kiss her her.

As a Slayer, an elite law enforcer descended from Azrael himself, his charge from the Underveil General is clear: Kill her or die. He has been told she is one of them--an Undead. Nothing but a parasite to be destroyed. But he has been told wrong.

Nikolai and Elena find themselves in a life and death battle to stop a plot designed to lift the Underveil and enslave humans.

With her analytical mind and his centuries of training and experience, they might be able to foil the plot with their lives and maybe their hearts intact. But in order to succeed, he must help her become the very thing he hates the most: an Undead.

MY THOUGHTS:

4 out of 5 stars

I used to read PNR's like they were air I needed to breathe.  For every title I started, I had at least four waiting for me to finish.  Have you seen the book igloo on Pinterest...yeah, I could probably build it with the books I've accumulated.

And then, just like that, I dropped the genre completely.  Because sometimes you just need to read something different...and then you discover all the books in your new favorite genre and the cycle starts over again.  Hence my stack of YA and NA and Fantasy books that I can use to build neighboring igloos.

There was something about this book though, that made me want to read it NOW.  Even though I wasn't looking for a PNR, I NEEDED to read it.  (And ok, yes I'll admit it...the cover wasn't hard to look at).  So when I was flying to attend a conference a couple of weeks ago, I had it all set on my Kindle ready to go -- 2 flights and a 3 hour layover in between...perfect!

Thrown headfirst into a world she didn't know existed, Elena Arcos has quite the situation on her hands.  Vampires, hunters, elves, shifters, new powers...welcome to life underneath the veil.  Oh, and Nikolai - can't forget him.  Especially once they are joined together by magic that doesn't break easily.

Oh, and there is the tiny little bit about a prophecy.  So that also complicates things a bit.

I have to confess that I was a bit confused with the story at the beginning -- granted my PNR wheels were a bit rusty, but it took me a few chapters to visualize the different worlds and beings that exist "beneath the veil".  But once I did, I was hooked.  I found the story to be funny, attention-grabbing, and...well, lets just say that all the elements that I look for in a paranormal romance book were there.

As a reader with an overwhelming number of books on my to-read list, I sometimes feel like starting a new unknown series can be a bit of a risk - especially when it is an genre that has been off my radar for a while.  No risk, no reward though, right?  While this book is primarily the story of Elena and Nikolai, the world that has been built and the other characters introduced are intriguing and I look forward to reading more in this series and more from Marissa Clarke.

Thank you to Entangled Publishing for allowing me a chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

My Thoughts:
4 out of 5 stars
Dear Daisy Prescott...thank you.

Not long after I started this blog, I posted a review about her first novel, Geoducks Are For Lovers.  I loved so much about that story, the history of the characters, the setting, the fact that they were my age and that I still like them :)...but I don't believe I really hit on one of the perks of Geoducks, John Day.

And yes, he is a definite perk.

Except for in Ready to Fall, he is more than just a perk.

While Geoducks was about friends reconnecting and becoming more, Ready to Fall is the story of John and his temporary new neighbor, Diane.  Diane is starting over after a failed marriage and is renting Maggie's cabin on Whidbey Island for the off-season.  A transplant from New York City, she is hardly used to island life and her inexperience is a rude awakening -- for both herself and for John.  Literally.

I absolutely love the connection between John and Diane.  It was cute and sweet and refreshing to read that I find myself smiling as I write this review.  When I'm often asked about why I read so much YA, my standard answer is that I don't like reading about "adult problems" and that I like the tummy flutters and shy grins of new love.

For a "grown up book" this book can hold its own in the flutters department.

As Diane begins to find her true self amidst the rubble of her divorce, John begins to experience a bit of his own self-examination.  And what they both discover is absolutely flail-worthy.

This book is a solid follow-up to one of my favorite reads of the past year.  While I find many "follow ups" to read as a glorified retelling of the first book, I didn't feel like that at all while reading Ready to Fall.  Yes, the setting is the same and the community is small, but really, this book is truly John and Diane's story.  And what a story it is.

And again, to Daisy Prescott, I say thank you.

Excerpt:

I pulled the bike off the road and we ran for the overhang of the store. Standing in the shadows next to the bagged ice freezer on the side of the building, I took off my helmet and brushed the rain from the back of my neck. Diane was dry on her front, but the back of her jacket appeared nearly soaked.

After she took off her helmet and set it on the ground, I gave her a stern look. “See what I mean about not talking about the weather? Around here it can rain when the sun’s out.”

Brushing the water off her jacket, she peered up at me with a sheepish smile. “Sorry. How long do you think we’ll have to wait it out?”

I left the dry safety of the overhang to stare up at the fast moving clouds swirling above us.

“Hard to say. Might turn back to being a mist. Might not.”

“Can we ride home in the rain?” she asked, leaning against the wall. Her wet jeans clung to her legs and I found myself staring while she lifted one leg to brace it on the wall.

“Sure. Do we want to? Not really.”

“What should we do?”

I lifted my eyes to her face. Her eyes sparkled same as they did back in the bar. I swept my thumb across my lower lip and then ran it across my chin.

Since our hike at Deception Pass, I couldn’t stop thinking about kissing her. The day she received a letter from the asshole wasn’t the right time. Normally, I didn’t give this much thought to making a move. If I wanted to kiss a woman, I did. As long as she gave me the right signals. Maybe that was part of the problem with Diane. I didn’t know her signals. We flirted, we teased. I caught her staring, but it never moved from thoughts to action. My hand was getting tired of all the time I spent thinking.

There was a time and place for action.

That time and place was now.

“Store’s closed. Nothing to do but stand here and watch the rain fall.” I moved closer to her along the wall, my shoulder brushing hers when I mirrored her posture. My hand dropped between us and brushed against her leg, but I faced the line of water dripping from the roof gutter.

“Nothing?” she asked, her voice more of a whisper.

“Can’t think of anything,” I whispered back while I turned to gaze down at her. “You?”

I could see everything in her eyes. I wasn’t the only one thinking about kissing. When I entwined our fingers, her breath hitched. I broke eye contact and stared down at her mouth. Her lips parted and her tongue peeked out to wet the bottom one.

“John …” Her words faded away when I leaned down.

Book Blast: Six by Rachel Robinson

This book is on my must read list because I am seriously craving a good Paranormal story.  Craving. It.  So when I was offered the opportunity to promote this book, I was all over it because honestly, the premise fascinates me.

SYNOPSIS:

Emmalina is an immortal darkling. A half human, half dark witch. Though she was born with all six emotions, she has arrived at her eighteenth birthday and all but one miserable emotion has fled her body.  The mission of the dark witches who control the new, darker world is simple—eradicate weakness. Weakness is summed up in one word. Emotion. Or, the six. Anger, fear, sadness, joy, surprise, and love. The dark witches want her. She wants something else more.
She wants six.

You want to read it too now, don't ya?  :)

EXCERPT:

Then, I see the specific memory—the one that haunts me. It is the memory that consumes my being with longing because I have been unable to attach an emotion to it. I feel as if I am in that memory at this moment.

“I’m going to get you Emmalina,” my mother says. I run so fast that my tiny heart is thumping rapidly. Sticky sweat surrounds my face and mats my hair at my hairline. My feet are bare and the gray haze is the lightest I ever remember it being. I look over my shoulder and laugh as I see her running after me. She has her hands stretched out toward me and her brown hair bounces as she runs. It is a dream in slow motion that I get to relive. The moment is perfect. Her smile is electric. Her voice is sweeter than any treat from the old world.

“You can’t catch me, Mommy!” My singsong child’s voice rings back at her. I want her to catch me. I want her hands tickling me. She grabs me and lifts me under my arms, and up over her head. I can touch the sky. I am flying. She spins around in a circle but I do not look around. I look at her smiling face. It is so cheerful, it is so perfect. It holds the same emotion that I feel in this moment.

We are complete. I am not empty.

The emotion rips me from the inside. “I feel joy,” I tell Finn as I throw my head back laughing at the sky. The emotion tears through me more powerful than anything else, filling me with purpose. I am elated, delighted, I feel contentment and relief. Excitement courses through my veins more powerful than dark magic. It is incomparable. I splash the water at my sides and giggle because I want to, not because I think it prudent. I am so happy I remember her—thankful Finn has forced this from me in his own way. I jump toward him and he catches me under my arms.

He lifts me above his head and I feel like I am floating on a cloud in an alternate universe. He spins in one slow circle. I gaze down at him knowing this is what my mother wants for me. I vow to make her sacrifice worth it.

Finn laughs loudly—a hearty, meaningful laugh. We revel in this perfect moment together just Finn and I and our joyful laughter.

I know then that his laugh is the only sound I like more than my own heartbeat.

Excerpt:

Colin was moaning, thrashing about, in the throes of a nightmare while unconscious. On the bright side, at least he wasn’t dead. She’d kept him warm against her, promising anyone who was listening she’d give up chocolate, Pepsi, and wine if they’d let him be okay and get them out of here.

Swearing, Colin couldn’t hear over the infernal racket. And why was water dripping on him—were they going to drown in this godforsaken tunnel? Sitting up, his head spun.

“Wait, you’re hurt. A rock hit you on the head. There was so much blood, I tried to stop it but you wouldn’t wake up.” Drying her eyes and hiccupping from crying, Emily helped Colin sit up.

“I thought you were lost in the shadows, it’s been so long—I can’t find any way out, there’s an awful scrabbling noise. I think the rats are back. It’s terrible having an overactive imagination. I’m not normally such a mess but I kept thinking the rats would get in and eat us alive.” This last bit was said on a particularly unladylike hiccup as Emily pulled herself together.

“Do you think you can stop hiccupping so I can listen for this scratching you heard? Shall I scare you to make the hiccups stop?” Colin smiled thinking how brave she was, taking care of him while she was afraid. She was strong whether she believed it or not.

Listening, he could hear faint noises. This was good; the rats knew how to get out. If he could pinpoint where they were, there was a chance he could find a way to escape. Hell, being trapped while he was injured afforded him some peace from worrying about the bloody Day Walkers killing him while he recovered.

Deciding the noise was coming from the right of them, Colin started digging, removing stone, placing it on the path behind them. If the Day Walkers found the entrance, at least they’d have to remove the stone. They couldn’t materialize past it since they couldn’t see where they were going. You had to know where you were going or you might end up embedded in a wall. While it wouldn’t kill you, it might be a hell of a long time before you got out.

“Let me help.” Emily started prying the rock and stone loose.

The bloody stone was heavy; his arms were straining. Pulling a particularly heavy chunk out of the debris, Colin jerked as another rib broke. It must have been fractured and snapped from the strain. He stopped a moment as dizziness and nausea threatened to make him look like a girl.

Gah, damnit to hell, it hurt like a bitch. Focus, you prissy girl, keep going, ignore the pain.

“Ouch!” Emily winced next to him.

Taking her hands in his, Colin examined her fingers; she had snapped off or ripped off each nail down to the quick trying to help remove the stone. “Lass, stop, you’ve destroyed your pretty nails. I liked the color, reminded me of a bronze shield I once had.” Anger filled him; she’d been injured because of him. If she hadn’t trusted him, none of this would have happened. She’d never cried out; simply kept digging. She had a spine of steel which he admired.

“They don’t hurt anymore.”

“You’re in shock. Now lean as close to the wall as you can.” With a grunt and a heave, the boulder came rolling past her to land at their feet. Air came rushing in, along with the sound of…rats.

“I’ve never been so happy to hear those dirty little creatures.”

Reaching for Emily’s hand, Colin first had to wipe his hand and forearm off on his kilt; he must have re-opened one of his injuries, it was bleeding again. He didn’t care about the blood, he didn’t want to worry Emily.

“It’s another tunnel. We’ll follow the rats to safety. Take my hand; it’s tall enough we can stand up.”

In the darkness, he felt her wince as she placed her hand in his. Stopping, he cursed. He should have taken care of her when he realized, not waited. Ripping what was left of his tattered shirt, he bound her hands to cushion the tender fingertips.

“There, there, this will help. Once we are safe, we’ll have them tended to. Are you okay?” He stroked her cheek.

“I feel numb.”

“Most men would have screamed like girls—ripping a fingernail off hurts like hell.” Admiration filled his voice.

She sniffed, “I don’t feel very brave.”

Turning a corner, air blew in ruffling their hair, the sound of water trickling by their feet, the rats scurrying to freedom. Ahead, he could make out a dim light. Reaching the end of the tunnel, they came to a stone wall. The rats were scurrying out; air and water coming in…there had to be a door here somewhere.

Excitement filled his voice, “Feel every inch of the wall…” Colin paused for a moment thinking of earlier, her warm hand on his thigh…what it would be like to have her hands exploring every inch of his body. Mentally eye rolling, he continued, “There has to be a lever in the stone we can press to free us.”

Exploring every inch of the wall, a thud sounded as Colin pushed in on a stone rosette. Light flooded into the space as Colin pushed with all his might, the heavy door swinging open, leading them outside into the late afternoon.

Sagging with relief, Emily wheezed. “You distracted me so I wouldn’t flip out. You’re nice when you’re not being grumpy.”

Hugging Colin tight, she stood on her tiptoes, kissing his cheek. “Thank you.”

Desire surging, his control snapped, pulling her tightly against him, he captured her mouth in a demanding kiss, invading her with his tongue, bruising her lips; he wanted to crawl inside her, take her there against the stone wall, on the banks of the water.

Arching against him, she ran her hands over his back and arms, feeling his strength, his wounds—and the blood. A bucket of cold water would have had the same effect. She pulled away, “You’re bleeding and badly injured, we have to find help.”

“Damn the bloody injuries.” Growling at the distance between them, he shook his head to clear it.
The worry on her face brought him back to his senses.

“Aye, we need tending, though I’d rather stay here and kiss you senseless. We’re close to the Black Swan. It will be safe for a bit, we can get you bandaged up, a hot meal, drink, and then rest. In the morning I’ll arrange a ship and we’ll set sail up the coast, somewhere safe.”

Daylight was fading, the late afternoon shadows would help hide them from prying eyes. There was a path running along the water, ending at the back door of the Black Swan. Robert could help them with a ship. They’d go to Ravensmore. Fury ignited him, thinking of Rawlins and others trying to hurt Emily.

The thought kept eating at him. They couldn’t know about the curse, what it meant, could they? He’d cut down every last sonofabith before he’d let any of those filthy bastards lay a hand on a single strand of Emily’s hair.

MINE...no one would touch his woman.
